Shildon Coal Drops

Jan 22, 2024 | NCS

We recently started the works at Shildon Coal Drops in County Durham.

The Coal Drops were originally constructed in 1846. The structure slopes from ground level to a maximum height of 6m along its length and originally included four wooden chutes.  They form part of the nearby Locomotion Museum but are currently owned by Durham County Council.

The works include general masonry repairs, including vegetation removal and repointing, as well as ground consolidation works by geopolymer injection, with the aim of introducing consistency and improving soil conditions across the site to improve stability and reduce potential railway induced vibrations.

This is a really interesting project with a lot of history attached to it.  We are working in partnership with Durham County Council, Blackett Ord Conservation Engineering and Locomotion – part of the Science Museum Group.
